Washington Youth Tour Delegates

Applications for the 2022 Washington Youth Tour program are available now!

Irwin EMC will select 2 high school students (junior or senior year) to receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC, June 16-23, 2022.  

Eligible participants:  Must be a junior or graduating senior for the 2021-2022 school year in a participating public/private school system or home school student in our service territory regardless of electrical utility provider. * Irwin EMC reserves the right to allow students who attend school outside our service territory to apply if their parents/guardians are members in good standing with Irwin EMC.

Winners of the contest must be available to attend the Washington Youth Tour June 16-23, 2022 and agree to the terms and conditions if selected. Additionally, any student who has previously won the Washington Youth Tour is not eligible to enter the contest a second time. 

Follow the COVID-19 guidelines of the tour. Everyone attending the Washington Youth Tour will be required to follow CDC and federal and local government regulations related to COVID-19. Additionally, Georgia EMC reserves the right to require participants to be fully vaccinated before participating if key tour destinations, hotels, airlines, travel companies, or other critical entities require full vaccination for entry or use. And, all participants will be required to submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken 48 hours or less before departure.

Letter Criteria and topic:  Write a letter to the President of the United States explaining an energy related problem and outline your proposed solution.  The letter should not be more than 500 words and should be typed, double-spaced on white paper and have a cover sheet with title and last four digits of their Social Security Number. The student’s name should not be stated anywhere in the letter. The letter should follow standard rules of grammar and composition and reference material should be documented.  Independent judges will grade the letters.

Interview:  Following the evaluation of written work, the top four applicants will participate in an interview.  Interview judging criteria will include general knowledge of energy topic, poise, personality, professionalism, and speaking ability. Date of interview will be discussed after top four applicants are called.  Independent judges will conduct interview.

Due date:  Letter topic (listed above) and Application Form should be delivered to David Martin, Irwin EMC, P.O. Box 125, Ocilla, GA 31774 no later than 5 p.m. on March 1, 2022. *If your household receives electrical service from Middle Georgia EMC, Colquitt EMC or any other participating EMC, please contact your local EMC to request information regarding their application process. Students whose parents are members of Irwin EMC in good standing, but go to school outside our territory, can apply through Irwin if they are a junior or graduating senior for the 2021-2022 school year.
