Monitor Your Meter

By taking a few minutes each day and jotting down the reading on your electric meter, you can determine daily usage and habits that can help you and your family use energy wisely.

By subtracting the previous day's readings each day, you get the number of kilo-watt hours used during the past 24-hour period. By adding the daily figures into a weekly total, you can see how much and when your family used power during the month.

Each home and family is different. The amount of energy used at a home is a function of the size of the family, size of the home, the temperature that you set your thermostat on and the efficiency of the home. Many other factors affect the home's energy consumption.

Your meter will not lie. When it records more electricity being used from one day to the next, try to find out why. Look back at the family's activities for the previous day...was the weather hottor or cooler than the previous day, did you do any extra washing or have guests?

Download our chart to jot down the reading on your electric meter. Start the first of each month and always read at exactly the same time each day. Note: To obtain daily kWh usage, subtract previous day's reading from current day's reading.
